About the Mitsubishi brand

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is a Japanese automaker headquartered in Tokyo and part of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Founded in 1917, Mitsubishi is one of Japan's oldest automobile manufacturers, known for its durability, off-road capability, and technical innovation- from turbocharging to four-wheel-drive systems. Today, the company is accelerating its transition toward electrification, blending hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and battery electric models across a diverse global portfolio.

Mitsubishi was one of the world's first automakers to commercialize a modern electric vehicle with the launch of the i-MiEV in 2009. This compact city BEV featured a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery and a range of approximately 160 kilometers, establishing Mitsubishi as an early pioneer in zero-emission mobility. Though production ended in 2021, the i-MiEV remains a landmark in EV history for its efficiency and accessibility.

Building on this foundation, Mitsubishi introduced the eK X EV in 2022, a fully electric kei car co-developed with Nissan and sold exclusively in Japan. Equipped with a 20 kWh battery and a range of around 180 kilometers (WLTC), the eK X EV is the brand's first new BEV in over a decade and caters to Japan's urban commuting market. Its twin model, the Nissan Sakura, shares the same platform and drivetrain, reflecting the close collaboration within the Alliance.

In China, Mitsubishi expanded into the crossover BEV segment with the Airtrek, launched in 2022 through the GAC Mitsubishi joint venture. The Airtrek features a 70 kWh battery, approximately 520 kilometers of range (CLTC), and a 135 kW front-mounted motor. Based on GAC's Aion platform, it demonstrates Mitsubishi's ability to adapt global EV technology for regional markets, combining long-range capability with modern digital design.

Alongside its BEV efforts, Mitsubishi continues to lead in plug-in hybrid technology through models such as the Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV, which remain core to its electrification strategy in markets where charging infrastructure is still maturing. The latest Outlander PHEV, built on the Alliance CMF-C/D platform, delivers up to 84 kilometers of electric-only range and seamless dual-motor control.

Looking ahead, Mitsubishi plans to introduce new all-electric crossovers and compact EVs based on Alliance architectures such as AmpR Small and CMF-EV. These models, expected from 2026 onward, will form the backbone of the company's next-generation global BEV lineup. Mitsubishi's Environmental Plan 2030 targets a 40% reduction in CO? emissions through an expanded mix of BEVs, hybrids, and PHEVs supported by sustainable battery sourcing and recycling.

Electrification Status

Mitsubishi is a transitioning automaker advancing from early BEV leadership to a new phase of integrated electrification. With production BEVs such as the i-MiEV, eK X EV, and Airtrek already on the market- and next-generation global EVs in development under the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance- the company continues to evolve as a pioneer of practical, efficient, and sustainable electric mobility.
