3-Row Electric SUVs & MPVs
Seven- to nine-seat electric passenger vehicles are the highest-average-transaction-price segment in the EV market and one of the most strategically contested. Families, operators, and fleet buyers who need maximum capacity represent a premium buyer profile that every major OEM wants to capture — and the segment has historically been underserved by BEVs. The Model X has been the only serious full-size 3-row BEV in North America for nearly a decade. That era is ending in 2026 on multiple fronts simultaneously.
Tesla is exiting the Model X and entering something new. Tesla announced the discontinuation of both the Model S and Model X with production ending Q2 2026 — closing the book on the vehicles that established Tesla as a premium brand. In their place, Elon Musk posted on March 25, 2026: "Something way cooler than a minivan is coming" — the strongest public confirmation yet of a Cybertruck-derived 3-row CyberSUV that has been visible as a clay model in Tesla's design studio since 2025. A large vehicle shell spotted by drone at Gigafactory Texas in March 2026 is widely believed to be either the CyberSUV or the Model Y L (the 6-seat, long-wheelbase Model Y launched in China in August 2025). Either way, Tesla's 3-row strategy is in active development and represents one of the most watched product launches in the EV industry.
Meanwhile, Chinese OEMs have built the strongest 3-row BEV lineup on earth. BYD Tang L EV, Li Auto MEGA (EREV), Zeekr 009, AITO M9, and DENZA N9 collectively outclass the Western 3-row field on range, interior quality, and technology integration. These vehicles are entering global markets and will define the competitive benchmark for the segment through 2030.
Tesla 3-Row Strategy - Model X Exit & What Comes Next
| Vehicle | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tesla Model X | Discontinued - production ends Q2 2026 | Pioneered 3-row BEV segment; criticized for cramped third row and aging platform; Falcon Wing doors remain distinctive but divisive; ~10 years of production |
| Tesla Model Y L (China/Global) | Active - launched China August 2025; expanding to AU, NZ, TH | 150mm longer wheelbase; 179mm longer overall; 6-seat 2+2+2 layout; LGES 5M battery 84.7 kWh; 0-62 in 4.5s; US launch delayed to end of 2026 at earliest; Giga Texas drone sightings March 2026 |
| Tesla CyberSUV (rumored) | Unconfirmed - clay model spotted in Tesla video 2025; hiring for prototype vehicle active March 2026 | Cybertruck-platform-derived 3-row SUV; Musk "something way cooler than a minivan is coming" March 25 2026; would compete with Cadillac Escalade IQ and Rivian R1S; stainless steel design language expected; Giga Texas has production capacity given Cybertruck underutilization (~50K/year vs 150K designed capacity) |
3-Row & 7-Seat Segment Overview
The segment covers two distinct body styles with the same core mission — moving 7-9 people comfortably:
3-Row SUVs - combine 7-seat capacity with higher ground clearance, SUV styling, and in many cases off-road capability; the dominant form factor in North America; highest ATPs in the EV market; Kia EV9, Rivian R1S, Cadillac Escalade IQ, GMC Yukon EV as leading examples
MPVs / Minivans / People Movers - prioritize interior space efficiency, sliding doors, flat floors, and configurability over styling; dominant in Asia and growing in Europe; Volkswagen ID. Buzz, Chrysler Pacifica (PHEV - not BEV), Li Auto MEGA (EREV), DENZA D9 as examples
Autonomous / Robotaxi Variants - Kia PV5, Volkswagen ID. Buzz AD, and Farizon SuperVan all have announced or developing robotaxi variants; the MPV form factor with sliding doors and flat floor is well-suited to ride-hail and autonomous people-mover applications

Market Context
China leads product breadth - Chinese OEMs have more 3-row BEV and EREV models available than any other market; Li Auto, BYD, AITO, Zeekr, DENZA, and NIO all compete in this segment with capable vehicles priced below Western equivalents
800V architecture now standard at premium tier - Kia EV9, Hyundai IONIQ 9, and Lucid Gravity all use 800V or 900V+ architectures enabling 20-minute 10-80% charging times that change the road trip calculus for large family vehicles
Model X gap is real - with Model X ending production Q2 2026, there is no established 3-row Tesla BEV for the US market in H2 2026; the gap creates genuine switching pressure toward EV9, Escalade IQ, and R1S while the CyberSUV or Model Y L prepares
Towing matters in North America - 3-row SUV buyers in North America frequently tow trailers, boats, and campers; Rivian R1S (11,000 lb), Escalade IQ (8,200 lb), and IONIQ 9 (5,000 lb) have competitive towing ratings; Model X towing (5,000 lb) was a consistent criticism
EREV is a significant competitor - Li Auto's 3-row EREV lineup (L7, L8, L9) is the bestselling EV family vehicle in China; the extended-range electric architecture addresses range anxiety while maintaining EV driving experience; US EREVs launching 2026-2027 from multiple OEMs
