Lidar became a Chinese mass-market part in 2025, at about $200 a unit
Hesai shipped 1.62 million lidars in 2025, triple 2024, became the first lidar maker with a full year of GAAP profit, and guides 3 to 3.5 million units for 2026 with capacity above 4 million. RoboSense shipped 912,000 and Seyond more than 332,000. The driver is China's carmakers fitting lidar as standard: Hesai's mass-market ATX unit sells for about $200, a small fraction of what robotaxi lidars cost five years ago.
Lidar measures 3D geometry directly by timing reflected laser pulses, which gives precise distance to every surface regardless of lighting. Multi-lidar layouts with three to six units per car are spreading in China for Level 3 redundancy, and Hesai is the primary lidar partner for Nvidia's DRIVE Hyperion 10 reference platform. Robotics is the second market: Hesai shipped 239,000 robotics lidars in 2025 and holds orders for more than 10 million lawn-mower units. Western automakers have adopted lidar more slowly, and Tesla still uses none in production cars.
