About the JMEV brand
JMEV (Jiangling Motors Electric Vehicle Co., Ltd.) is a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer headquartered in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, specializing in compact and affordable EVs. Established in 2015 as a subsidiary of Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), JMEV was one of China's early dedicated new energy vehicle (NEV) companies focused entirely on battery electric mobility. The company received a major strategic boost in 2019 when Renault Group acquired a significant stake, forming a joint venture aimed at developing and producing small and mid sized electric vehicles for both the Chinese and export markets.
JMEV's product lineup targets the urban and entry level segments of the EV market, with models emphasizing efficiency, affordability, and practicality. Core vehicles include the EV3, EV5, and E400 compact SUVs, all designed for short to medium range driving. The JMEV EV3 is a small city hatchback offering around 300-350 km of range, while the EV5 compact crossover delivers a more premium experience with a larger battery, improved materials, and fast charging capability. The company has also introduced light commercial EVs under the E200 and E300 models, which serve urban logistics fleets.
JMEV operates an integrated R&D and manufacturing base in Nanchang and sources batteries from established suppliers such as CATL and Farasis Energy. The vehicles use in house developed electric drive systems and smart cockpit platforms that support mobile connectivity and over the air (OTA) software updates. The company's design approach prioritizes simplicity and functionality while maintaining a youthful, technology driven appeal for city drivers.
Following Renault's entry, JMEV began aligning its engineering standards and digital architecture with global EV compliance requirements. The partnership aimed to create scalable platforms suitable for export markets, including Southeast Asia, Latin America, and eventually Europe. However, Renault has since reduced its investment footprint in JMEV, leaving the brand under majority control of Jiangling Motors while retaining access to international collaboration and certification know how.
Today, JMEV continues to operate independently within the JMC Group as a specialist in compact electric cars and urban mobility solutions. The brand's mix of affordability, established production infrastructure, and evolving software capabilities positions it as one of China's more mature small scale EV manufacturers catering to the domestic mass market and select export channels.
