About the Mahindra brand
Mahindra Electric, part of the Mahindra & Mahindra Group headquartered in Mumbai, India, is one of the country's earliest pioneers in electric mobility. The company traces its roots to Reva Electric Car Company, founded in 1994 and acquired by Mahindra in 2010, which produced one of the world's first mass market electric cars- the Reva and later the e2o. Today, Mahindra's electrification strategy spans passenger vehicles, commercial fleets, and electric three wheelers, positioning it as a leading force in India's transition to zero emission transport.
Mahindra's EV operations are structured under Mahindra Electric Automobiles Limited (MEAL) and the broader Mahindra Advanced Design Europe (MADE) studio in the UK, which leads global design and platform development. The company's next generation of EVs will be built on two dedicated architectures- the INGLO platform for mid to high end passenger vehicles and the Born Electric (BE) platform for new lifestyle and performance oriented models. Both platforms utilize advanced battery chemistry, 800 volt electrical systems, and modular skateboard design to support fast charging, scalable production, and connected software ecosystems.
Mahindra unveiled its future vision in 2022 with a family of concept vehicles under the Born Electric lineup: the BE.05, BE.07, BE.09, and the XUV.e8 and XUV.e9. These models combine rugged design, aerodynamic efficiency, and digital integration, targeting both Indian and global markets. The XUV.e8, based on the INGLO platform, will be the first to reach production in 2025, followed by the BE.05 compact SUV. Key features across the lineup include L2+ autonomous capability, immersive human machine interfaces, and fast charging compatible with up to 175 kW DC input.
Mahindra has also formed a major partnership with Volkswagen Group to source MEB platform components- including electric drive units, batteries, and unified cell technology- enhancing performance, safety, and energy efficiency across the INGLO platform. This collaboration strengthens Mahindra's global supply chain and technical competitiveness as it scales its EV portfolio.
In addition to passenger EVs, Mahindra continues to lead in electric commercial and three wheeler mobility through models like the Treo and eAlfa Mini, which are widely used in Indian cities for urban logistics and passenger transport. The company is also expanding charging infrastructure and fleet partnerships across India to accelerate EV adoption at scale.
Mahindra's electrification roadmap aligns with India's national EV mission, emphasizing localized production, sustainable sourcing, and battery recycling. With manufacturing facilities in Pune and Bengaluru, and global R&D operations in the UK, the brand is positioning itself as an integrated EV ecosystem provider spanning design, technology, and infrastructure.
Electrification Status
Mahindra is a transitioning electric automaker advancing from hybrid and early generation city EVs toward a fully electric, globally competitive lineup. With its INGLO and Born Electric platforms, strategic partnerships with Volkswagen, and upcoming BE and XUV.e models, Mahindra is redefining Indian electric mobility with a focus on scale, design, and sustainable innovation.
