Street sweepers electrify fastest in the compact class, because the work is slow and local and because quiet electric brooms and fans let cities sweep pedestrian zones early, late and overnight
Bucher Municipal's CityCat VS20e, Boschung's Urban-Sweeper S2.0 and Aebi Schmidt's eSwingo 200+ - all Swiss, all with about 2 m³ hoppers - are the reference compact electric sweepers in European cities. Boschung has piloted an autonomous version of the S2.0, Finland's Trombia runs a driverless street sweeper, and in China Autowise and Idriverplus run driverless sweepers on public roads and campuses.
A sweeper spends most of its energy on the body: the suction fan on a vacuum sweeper, the brooms and the water pump run all shift while the vehicle creeps at walking pace. That makes the battery-size question simple - pack energy has to cover fan and broom hours, not kilometers - and makes compact sweepers a good fit for packs that refill at the depot overnight. Truck-mounted sweepers for arterial roads and highways carry larger hoppers and run longer at speed between dump sites; in the US they are still mostly diesel or CNG, while Chinese sanitation makers Yutong and Fulongma sell electric washer-sweeper trucks to city bureaus at scale.
Noise sets the schedule. Diesel sweepers are often limited to daytime in residential streets and pedestrian zones; electric sweepers run at low enough noise to start before shops open and finish after they close, which is when pedestrian zones are empty. Zurich, Paris and other European cities have built fleets around that, and walk-behind litter vacuums such as Glutton's Zen cover sidewalks the sweepers cannot reach.
Autonomy comes to sweeping before most other city work because routes repeat, speeds are low and the job can run at night with few people around. Trombia's Free and the autonomous Boschung S2.0 operate in pilots with remote supervision; Autowise (Shanghai) and Idriverplus (Beijing) have deployed driverless sweepers in Chinese cities and on campuses, and Autowise has run pilots in Singapore.
