Rivian is a single-plant EV maker that sells premium trucks and SUVs, a delivery van for Amazon and its electrical architecture to Volkswagen. The R2 is the test of whether it can become a volume automaker.

Rivian builds every vehicle in one plant in Normal, Illinois, and began R2 deliveries in June 2026 after 2025 volume fell to 42,247

The R2 midsize SUV is priced well below the R1 and is built on a new line added to Normal, which takes the plant to about 215,000 vehicles a year. A second plant east of Atlanta, Georgia, backed by a US Department of Energy loan, is sized for R2 and R3 at higher volume.

Rivian designs its drive units, packs, battery management, zonal electrical architecture and software in-house but buys cells, from Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution among others. Its second-generation R1 cut the number of ECUs sharply with a zonal design; that architecture is now licensed to Volkswagen through the RV Tech joint venture, a deal worth up to $5.8 billion that funds Rivian through the R2 ramp.

Rivian's other business lines are the Commercial Van, built for Amazon and now sold to other fleets, and the Rivian Autonomy Platform, which pairs an in-house inference chip with lidar on R2. It spun out the Also micromobility business and the Mind Robotics industrial AI company in 2025.
