Infrastructure Electrification Manufacturers

chargers · HVDC · transformers · grid edge

Every electrified load sits behind a chain of transformers, switchgear and converters. Transformers, not chargers, are the layer the West cannot build fast enough.

Stack of six infrastructure layers from transmission to the plug with leading suppliers. HVDC and cables: Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, NARI, XJ Electric, Prysmian (China leads volume). Power transformers: Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, TBEA, HD Hyundai Electric (split). Substations and switchgear: Schneider Electric, ABB, Siemens, Eaton, Chint (US and Europe). Grid edge and distributed energy: Huawei, Sungrow, Enphase, SolarEdge, Tesla (China). Microgrids and controls: Schneider, Siemens, Eaton, GE Vernova (US and Europe). EV charging: Tesla, ABB, Alpitronic, Kempower, TELD (split). Finding

The grid layer is the bottleneck: transformer and HVDC makers are booked for years while charger supply is plentiful

Large power transformers take about 128 weeks to deliver and the US imports about 80% of them. Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy, GE Vernova and HD Hyundai Electric are expanding US plants, while China's TBEA, XD Electric, NARI and XJ Electric build the State Grid's ultra-high-voltage network at a pace no Western utility matches.

Chargers are the opposite case. Dozens of makers supply DC fast chargers, prices are falling and power stages are commoditizing around SiC modules. Tesla's NACS connector, standardized as SAE J3400, is now the North American default; Alpitronic and Kempower lead European high-power charging; TELD and Star Charge lead China, where BYD's 1,000 kW Flash Charging sets the power benchmark for cars.

The grid edge is where Chinese suppliers lead again: Huawei and Sungrow ship the most solar inverters and grid-forming storage worldwide. Microgrid controllers, protection and grid software remain Western strongholds held by Schneider Electric, Siemens, Eaton and GE Vernova, and grid cybersecurity is a US-led niche.
