Finding
BMW sells more EVs than any other European premium group, and the Neue Klasse moves it from shared platforms to a dedicated 800 V architecture with its own cylindrical cell design
BMW Group delivered 442,072 BEVs in 2025, including more than 105,000 MINIs, about 18% of 2.46 million total deliveries. The Neue Klasse iX3 entered production in Debrecen, Hungary in late 2025 on Gen6 eDrive: 800 V, 4695 cylindrical cells and up to 400 kW charging.
BMW designs its cells and buys them built to its specification. The 46 mm round cells come from CATL and EVE Energy, both building plants near Debrecen, and AESC was to supply US cells from Florence, South Carolina before pausing construction in 2025. Packs are assembled next to each vehicle plant: Straßkirchen in Lower Bavaria, Debrecen, Shenyang, Woodruff in South Carolina and San Luis Potosí. BMW develops cell chemistry at its pilot line in Parsdorf and recycles cells at Kirchroth. Its electrically excited synchronous motors, built in Steyr, Austria, use no rare-earth magnets, which keeps BMW out of the magnet supply chain China controls.
China remains BMW's largest single market. BMW Brilliance in Shenyang builds the long-wheelbase Neue Klasse iX3; Spotlight Automotive, a joint venture with Great Wall Motor, builds the MINI Cooper E and Aceman in Zhangjiagang; Momenta supplies driver assistance for China-spec cars; and BMW and Mercedes-Benz run a joint charging network in China. An i7 test car runs on Solid Power sulfide solid-state cells.
