Mercedes-Benz lost ground in EVs on its first-generation EVA2 cars and is resetting with in-house 800 V platforms, drive units and software
Mercedes-Benz Cars delivered 168,800 battery-electric cars in 2025, down 9%, against 442,072 for BMW Group. The EQS and EQE on EVA2 sold below plan. The CLA on MMA, launched in 2025, and the GLC with EQ Technology on MB.EA carry the reset.
Mercedes now designs the parts that decide efficiency: the two-speed rear drive unit with a silicon carbide inverter in the CLA, axial-flux motors from YASA (owned since 2021) for AMG.EA, and the MB.OS operating system with a zonal power network. It assembles packs in its own plants - Kamenz, Sindelfingen, Jawor, Bibb County in Alabama and Beijing - and recovers materials at a hydrometallurgical recycling plant in Kuppenheim that opened in 2024. Cells are bought, mainly from CATL, and Mercedes holds a stake in the ACC cell venture with Stellantis and TotalEnergies. An EQS fitted with Factorial Energy solid-state cells drove 1,205 km on one charge in 2025.
China is both market and supplier. Beijing Benz, the joint venture with BAIC, builds EVs for Chinese buyers; BAIC and Geely chairman Li Shufu each hold close to 10% of Mercedes-Benz Group; smart is a 50-50 venture with Geely; and China-spec MB.OS cars use Momenta for point-to-point driver assistance.
